Evaluation methods & study design
|
Data were collected through a website (kilometres cycled) and questionnaires at the start and end (response 57%) of the project. Data were collected at the company level, not the personal level.
The following parameters were evaluated
1. Number of participating companies
2. Number of bikes distributed
3. Number of bike trips saving car trips
4. Percentage of companies indicating the transport mode that was replaced with the project bikes
5. Number of kilometres cycled (registered by bike metres)
6. Number of kilometres cycled per bicycle
7. Amount of calories burned*
8. Number of kg of CO2 emissions reduced*
9. Intention to continue adopted cycling behaviour after the project
10. Saved 10 km car costs (€)
11. Percentage of companies indicating the project decreased company car costs
12. Percentage of companies that experienced that the project benefitted their employees' health
13. Percentage of companies that used bikes to commute
14. Percentage of companies that used bikes in spare time
*Based on the assumption that 100 per cent of the kilometres cycled were actually replacing car kilometres and using average calories and CO2 emissions per km.
(Changes in) awareness, health effects and socio-economic impacts were not evaluated.

Evaluation results
|
1. 53 participating companies*
2. 120 bikes distributed
3. 2,046 bike trips replacing car trips
4. Percentage of companies indicating the transport mode that was replaced with the project bikes
The companies stated that a total of 2,046 bike trips replaced car trips.
5. 33,768 kilometres cycled
6. 293 kilometres cycled/bicycle
7. 1,857 chocolate cakes awarded (= 1,002 kilo calories burned)*
8. 8,780 kg of CO2 emissions avoided*
9. 100% of the companies indicated the intention to continue with the adopted cycling behaviour after the project
10. SEK101,304 (€9,500 Dec 2008 rate) of saved 10 km car costs.
11. 80% of the companies indicated that the project decreased company car costs
12. 80% experienced that the project benefitted their employees' health
13. 13.47% of the companies used bikes to commute
14. Around 50% of the companies used bikes in spare time
After the first announcements, there was a huge interest among smaller companies (1-10 employees) and limited interest among the targeted companies (>10 employees). It was, therefore, decided to allow all companies to participate regardless of size. This resulted in an overrepresentation of smaller companies.

Conclusions
|
Planned key activities were carried out. The objective was partially achieved considering that the participation and related results were as planned, but the target group had to be expanded to all companies due to a lack of interest among companies with more than 10 employees.
